CRAFTING THE PERFECT READING NOOK

Five-star hotel or backwoods yurt, happiness lives in a squishy, comfy reading nook. The basics: a chair you never want to leave, a perfectly situated reading lamp, and a landing spot for a cup of tea.

Start with the chair—either low and loungy, so you can sink in, or with arms to support serious thought and easy book holding. For me, it's about perfect pitch. The lighting should either be directional, so you always have the right angle, or something that gives you a warm glow (you're reading the book not interrogating it). A floor lamp means your tiny table still has enough surface area for the essentials.

If you're going full library, make it robust, stacked with squillions of books to let the world know you are an intellectual. At home, we turned a skinny space into a cozy, well-appointed library. Temper those classic reading room accents (pharmacy lamps, wingback chairs, nubby velvet) with a few out-there objets and unexpected modernist touches. A prissy library is a window into the lack of a soul.
